History of the Papaya

Papaya’s originally opened in 1989 when the first owner brought her vision to fruition. The second owners brought yet another vision to Papaya’s in 1996.

Jessica Leech moved her family from the east coast to purchase Papaya’s in order to bring the people of Kaua‘i a better selection of health food, and to raise their family on the beautiful island. Their ideas were immediately embraced by the island’s residents and visitors, with the creation of a fun community based atmosphere of healthy organic food supported by a knowledgeable, helpful staff. Without delay, the Café was revised to include naturally healthy food; bulk food bins—including herbs and spices—were installed to decrease customers’ food costs and increase the variety of offerings.

Because of our customers’ support, we were able to acquire another 1,000 square feet of space to expand our Health and Beauty Aids and Produce sections in addition to another register. With the addition of a new freezer, were able to double the selection and amount of frozen and refrigerated products offered
